Armwood opened in September 1984. The school is named for Blanche Armwood, who served as Supervisor of Negro Schools, and was known as an outstanding community organizer, humanitarian, and teacher, who passed the state teacher exam at the age of twelve. The school colors were decided by a committee of students, who chose King High School's blue and Brandon's gray, because Armwood students were pulled from those two schools. The mascot is the hawk.
